The signatures we are gathering are endorsements of the petition below. Our guidelines are different than a ballot measure petition. The requirements for signing this petition are as follows:
To reduce the introduction of toxins to our soil, water, and air toward a clean and pollution-free environment for all, the undersigned residents of Scottsdale call upon our elected representatives to adopt a “least hazardous first” pest management ordinance covering all municipal operations. Specifically, we ask that the City adopt a three-tier management approach in which a) non-chemical strategies are used first, b) if there are instances in which the desired level of control has not been achieved by non-chemical strategies, least toxic chemicals can be used, and c) higher toxicity chemicals would be used only when necessary to preserve public health and safety after all less hazardous methods have been exhausted.
Least toxic chemicals include Minimum Risk pesticides (as defined in 40 CFR 152.25) and Organic Certified pesticides. Higher toxicity chemicals include EPA-registered non-organic pesticides.
This graphic illustrates the three-tier management approach.
